Walker Academy 2018

Before registering as a CIC, Rowan McCabe and Donald Jenkins ran a 7-week pilot project in Walker Riverside Academy. Funded by the Wellesley Trust, it was delivered in conjunction with Apples and Snakes, the UKs leading organisation for spoken word.

Working with a group of 15 young people, Rowan and Donald led them through the process of writing and performing their own slam poetry. The project culminated in a group performance where 7 young people competed against each other in a poetry slam. All of the work produced was also published on the Apples and Snakes website, exposing the poetry to a national audience.

‘One student who engaged particularly well was a boy who was at risk of being excluded last year. He has now been elected (with much enthusiasm) to join this year’s writers’ retreat.’
